MAMUJU, KOMPAS.com - National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia will serve the route linking Jakarta with West Sulawesi provincial city of Mamuju in June.West Sulawesi Governor Anwar Adnan Saleh said here on Monday that the route would boost air transportation access for the people in the province. The governor said that besides serving Mamuju-Jakarta route, Garuda would also make daily return flights from the provincial city to Gorontalo in Gorontalo province, Makassar in South Sulawesi, and Balikpapan in East Kalimantan.He said the route was expected to improve economic condition in West Sulawesi. "Garuda flight using Boeing 737-500 from Mamujus Tampapadang airport to Jakarta will start on June 1, 2011," Governor Anwar Adnan said. He added that the runway of Tampapadang airport would soon be extended from 2,250 meters to 2,500 meters in order to accommodate large aircraft such as Boeing 737-500. The governor expressed hope that the opening of Garudas Mamuju-Jakarta route would optimize air transportation service for the people of West Sulawesi province with five sub-districts. Besides Mamuju-Jakarta route, Garuda will also open Ambon-Surabaya line in June.Ambon Geeral Manager of Garuda Indonesia Hendra Sumarno has said the opening of Ambon-Surabaya route had been decided in a meeting with South Sulawesi Garuda management, because the result of a market survey had showed a big interest in flights on the route. Garuda plans to use 100 seating capacity Boeing planes on the 1.20 hours flight which would start from Ambon at 5.50 pm. Hendra believed that the flight to Surabaya would also contribute to plans of further trips toDenpasar, Jakarta and Australia.
